The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) participated in the international in-person ‘’Workshop to Identify Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Environmental, Social and Economic Issues for Tourism Enterprises, under the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Lima, Peru, on February 25 and 26, 2026.
The workshop formed part of an APEC project aimed at strengthening the capacity of member economies to consistently report both financial and non-financial information, particularly environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects.
Jorge Moller, GSTC Program Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, participated as the principal speaker in “Thematic Axis 2: Business Adaptation for Sustainable Tourism (best practices)’’ on February 25th, 2026. In his session, he addressed how tourism MSMEs can transition toward profitable and measurable sustainability practices that strengthen operational efficiency and long-term competitiveness.
During the workshop, Mr. Moller highlighted the role of the GSTC Standards as the global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism, emphasizing their practical application and relevance for tourism stakeholders of all sizes, particularly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). He also spoke about the impact of the Yuluca Alliance (AYLAC), emphasizing how collaborative action enables stakeholders to broaden their perspective, share knowledge, and move forward together toward more effective and aligned sustainability efforts in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
‘’The GSTC Standards provide a practical framework that helps tourism stakeholders lay a strong foundation for their sustainability journey. The Standards are adaptable and can be tailored to the size, scope, and specific characteristics of each organization or destination. What matters most is taking the first step in this transition, while it may present challenges, it ultimately strengthens effectiveness, resilience, and long-term competitiveness.’’ shares Mr. Moller.
The APEC workshop, developed with the participation of the ESAN Graduate School of Business, brought together international experts, tourism business representatives, policymakers, impact investors, and academics from APEC economies, fostering technical dialogue and collaboration to advance sustainable practices in the region.
