GSTC Participated in the 2025 Sustainable MICE Management Forum in Seoul

Key stakeholders from South Korea’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry convened at the Sustainable MICE Management Forum in Seoul on July 4 to explore challenges and opportunities in transitioning toward more sustainable practices. The forum brought together thought leaders and innovators to discuss how the MICE sector can align with global sustainability standards, addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities in a rapidly evolving global and domestic context.

Randy Durband, GSTC CEO, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the challenges and limitations of sustainable tourism practices. He highlighted the critical need for MICE operators to adopt the GSTC MICE Standard to enhance credibility and ensure consistent practices across markets.

The session “Introduction of MICE Companies Taking on Sustainability” showcased inspiring case studies. Jessica Choi, Sales Consultant at MGM, presented the group’s sustainable initiatives across its resort hotels and cultural venues in Macau. Korean startup Umoh introduced an AI-powered platform designed for event planning and real-time networking, while Ground K, a transportation provider, shared its strategies for reducing emissions through eco-friendly mobility solutions and event-specific carbon reporting.

Eunkyung Lee, Director of the UN Global Compact, spoke about ‘MICE Industry Insights Based on the UN SDGs’. Also, Dr. Sangyeol Lee, Executive Director of Goyang Convention Bureau and Asia Pacific Lead of the Global Destination Sustainability Movement, shared best practices and a forward-looking roadmap for advancing sustainability in the MICE sector.

The forum concluded with a dynamic panel discussion, ‘Focusing on ESG Issues Amid Domestic and Global Political Turmoil’, moderated by Professor Younghye Yoon from Dongduk Women’s University, where panelists, including Dr. Mihee Kang, Chief Assurance Officer at GSTC, debated policy gaps, governance issues, and the need for stronger institutional support for sustainability in Korea’s MICE industry.

The Sustainable MICE Management Forum fostered collaboration between international and local stakeholders to drive meaningful change in the industry.
