Equality in Tourism International released its 2025, Sun, Sand & Ceilings report. Drawing on publicly available information for 68 organisations, 28 tour operators, 16 hotels and hotel groups, 15 carriers, airlines and cruises, and nine professional associations, the charity calculated that women occupied 33 percent of board seats across global tourism, up from 23 percent in 2018 and 16 percent in 2013 yet still below the 50 percent target set seven years earlier.

Professional associations gained just a single percentage point after 2018, but the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) stood out as the only body to approach parity, fielding a board of ten men and nine women.

The report linked that outcome to deliberate governance from GSTC. As Chief Assurance Officer, Dr. Mihee Kang explained in the study, “GSTC has implemented policies against discrimination and promotes equal opportunities for employment and advancement, resulting in strong female leadership within the organisation. The future of sustainable tourism we aspire to should not necessitate discussions about gender equity, as it should already be a norm.”

As the report states: “The evidence is clear: gender-balanced leadership delivers better business results in tourism. Companies that embrace this reality aren’t just doing the right thing – they’re positioning themselves to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”

During the elections for the Board of Directors, GSTC encourages the voters (GSTC Members) to adhere to the spirit and the letter of the bylaws whereby GSTC seeks balance within the board’s membership regarding geographic regions, as well as gender balance throughout the organization.
