Epicentro Lanzarote

Epicentro Lanzarote, held on February 13th and 14th, 2025, at ‘Jameos del Agua’, brought together stakeholders from the tourism sector to promote sustainable practices. Organized by the GSTC Member, Lanzarote Society for External Promotion (SPEL Turismo Lanzarote), with the collaboration of the GSTC and UN Global Compact Spain, the event led to the development of the Epicentro Lanzarote Toolkit*. Based on the insights gathered during the workshop, the Toolkit has now been published by Turismo Lanzarote to support ongoing efforts toward sustainability in the tourism industry.

The Toolkit Epicentro Lanzarote provides a comprehensive framework designed to foster the creation of shared solutions within a tourism destination, focusing on building a responsible, attractive, and regenerative model.

Epicentro Lanzarote’s Toolkit: Key Takeaways from Sustainable Tourism Workshop Released

Developed through a collaborative process involving local communities, public and private sectors, and educational institutions, it proposes a system based on co-governance, open participation, and continuous improvement to strengthen the balance between environmental conservation, social well-being, and economic competitiveness.

Structured into strategic action blocks, Education, Promotion, and Management, for both the local community and tourists, the toolkit identifies key focus areas, recommended actions, impacts, and expected returns. It aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the GSTC Destination Standard (formerly known as the GSTC Destination Criteria), a simple ‘recipe’ for destinations seeking to begin their sustainability journey, with a strong focus on local empowerment and territorial stewardship.

The toolkit is now available for download here. [Available in Spanish Language]

*Note on GSTC’s Participation in Epicentro Lanzarote:

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) participated in the Epicentro Lanzarote event, held on February 13–14, 2025, through sessions and activities during the workshop. During its participation, GSTC shared knowledge about global sustainability standards in travel and tourism and facilitated discussions on best practices for destinations.

While GSTC was pleased to support the event and contribute to the dialogue with local stakeholders, it is important to clarify that it did not participate in the creation or development of the content of this toolkit. Therefore, the information and recommendations presented in this publication do not necessarily reflect GSTC’s official views or positions and should not be considered as formally endorsed by the organization.
