GSTC Member Destination Canada has released Canada’s Sustainability Storybook, a publication presenting sustainability initiatives related to business events across Canadian destinations. The document brings together examples of environmental, sociocultural, and economic programs implemented by cities, venues, and tourism partners, illustrating how sustainability can be integrated into event planning and delivery.
The Storybook aligns its initiatives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and is structured around three pillars: environmental stewardship, sociocultural impact, and economic contribution. It showcases initiatives that address waste reduction, energy efficiency, biodiversity protection, inclusive event design, community engagement, and local economic development.

Environmental examples in the publication include renewable energy at event venues, zero-waste programs, food waste recovery, carbon-neutrality strategies, and sustainable food and beverage sourcing.
The sociocultural initiatives presented focus on Indigenous programming, cultural experiences, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), food recovery partnerships, and community-based volunteering. Economic initiatives highlight approaches such as social procurement, support for local businesses, digital delegate tools, and programs that encourage attendees to contribute to host communities.
Each initiative in the Storybook is accompanied by a description of its purpose, how it can be used by event organizers, and its alignment with relevant UN SDGs.
