Luigi Cabrini, GSTC Chair, has been invited to join the Tourism Advisory Council of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Islands, following an invitation issued by Elena Mateo, coordinator of the UNESCO Global Geopark, and Isabel Betancort, head of the management team of the Centers of Art, Culture and Tourism, guided by Samuel Martín, Councillor of the Environment’s Department of the Cabildo Insular of Lanzarote. According to the invitation letter, the Council is intended to bring together professionals with recognized experience in tourism, and particularly in sustainable tourism, to help guide the Geopark’s future direction.
Located in the Canary Islands, Spain, the UNESCO Global Geopark of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Islands includes the entire island of Lanzarote and the islets of the Chinijo Islands, internationally recognized for its volcanic geological heritage and conservation efforts.
“It is a pleasure to be invited to join the Tourism Advisory Council of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Islands. Lanzarote has shown a long-standing commitment to sustainable tourism and a strong understanding of the need to connect tourism with environmental protection, cultural values, and the well-being of local communities. In this context, the GSTC Standards are important because they provide a shared framework to help guide tourism development in a more thoughtful, coherent, and sustainable way,” says Mr. Cabrini.

The new Tourism Advisory Council is expected to contribute to defining guidelines for sustainable tourism in the Geopark, promoting the compatibility of tourism activity with the conservation of natural and geological heritage, strengthening collaboration among public administrations, tourism businesses, local communities, and scientists, and supporting the development of responsible tourism products and experiences.
GSTC Member Lanzarote hosted last December the 30th anniversary of the first Charter for Sustainable Tourism and honored Luigi Cabrini for his trajectory and commitment to sustainability. During that event, GSTC endorsed the renewed Global Charter for Sustainable Tourism +30, with Luigi Cabrini signing the proposal on behalf of the organization.
Lanzarote was also the first place where the GSTC Destination Standard was applied (2012), and the Timanfaya National Park, located in the southwest of Lanzarote, joined as one of the First GSTC Attraction Early Adopters (2025).
