The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) participated in the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026, held on January 29, 2026, in Cebu, Philippines, under the theme “Navigating our tourism future, together.”
Marking its 45th edition, the forum brought together national tourism organizations, policymakers, development institutions, and tourism stakeholders from across the ASEAN region and beyond to engage in high-level dialogue, trade exchanges, and collaboration on the future of tourism development.
GSTC’s participation was part of the official program, organized in partnership with the Asian Development Bank, reflecting the growing focus on sustainability as a strategic pillar for tourism policy, investment, and long-term resilience in the region.
During the forum, Randy Durband, GSTC CEO, was part of the “High-Level Panel 5: Sustainable Tourism,” first with comments to set the stage for the panel, then joining the panel of senior representatives from across the sector to discuss how sustainability considerations are being integrated into tourism planning and development, and how regional cooperation can support more balanced and resilient tourism models.

The discussion addressed a range of themes related to sustainable tourism, including governance, policy alignment, and the role of international frameworks in supporting destinations as they respond to environmental, social, and economic challenges. Panelists shared perspectives on the importance of collaboration between governments, industry, and destination stakeholders to ensure that tourism growth remains responsible and inclusive.
“Sustainable tourism requires long-term thinking, coordinated action, and alignment between all stakeholders. The ASEAN Tourism Forum plays an important role in exchanging perspectives and reflecting on how sustainability can be integrated into tourism development throughout the ASEAN member states,” said Mr. Durband.
The ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026 provided a platform for exchanging perspectives on a range of tourism development topics, including sustainability, innovation, and regional cooperation. GSTC’s engagement in the forum reflected its ongoing contribution to international dialogue on sustainable tourism.
