The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training, sponsored by the Setouchi Tourism Authority, was completed, bringing together members of the organization for an engaging and insightful learning experience from September 17 to 19, 2025, in Okayama, Japan.

The training, conducted by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), provided the Setouchi Tourism Authority team with a comprehensive understanding of the GSTC Standards (known previously as GSTC Criteria, which serve as the global standards for sustainability in travel and tourism) and their practical applications in destination management.

Guided by GSTC Trainer Dr. Mami Futagami, Professor Emeritus at Meijo University, and GSTC Co-trainer Naomi Oiwa, GSTC’s Japan Market Development Manager, the course unfolded as an engaging journey into sustainable tourism. Through thought-provoking presentations, practical case studies, and insightful exchanges, participants deepened their knowledge of sustainability principles and explored strategies to strengthen Setouchi’s ongoing efforts toward responsible tourism development.

The GSTC Sustainable Tourism Training for Setouchi Tourism Authority concluded successfully. The first fieldwork visit took place in the area surrounding Okayama Castle and Korakuen Garden, a site designated as a National Special Place of Scenic Beauty and recognized as one of Japan’s three great gardens. The Managing Director of Okayama Korakuen Garden, together with staff members, shared insights into how they safeguard this invaluable cultural heritage through the implementation of their Preservation and Management Plan, while skillfully managing the steady flow of daily visitors. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Okayama Agricultural High School Restaurant, an inspiring initiative that sources fresh produce cultivated by students from local agricultural high schools, promoting education and community collaboration in the region.
